Butterfly Tale
I dreamed a magic song and wrote it down when I woke up.
I sang it out loud. Big magic there. Don’t try it.
It turned me blonde. And…
Video proof — now when the moon rises I turn into a butterfly.
I think the moral is: Don’t copy song-writing homework in your creative programming notebook.
~Nara Malone
An alternative moral could be, don’t miss a week of writing a Friday 55 for G-man. I suggest you hurry over and join the fun or drop in to see what others wrote. If you see a lesson in this butterfly tale that I have missed, please share it in the comments.
Credits: I learned the magic code for a butterfly shape-shifting transmogrifier over at Fred Beckhusen’s blog.
A couple of magic words from that song are from Disney, Cinderella. Whenever I read code tutorials that fling around words like Boolean, conditionals, floats, strings– that song starts playing in my brain. I knew you all would recognize that reference.
The programming form for the song came from an explanation of complex if/else blocks (/me rolls eyes) example on the Second Life Wiki.
Put them together and what do you get…

i can think of worse things to turn into when the moon rises 😉

I actually remember that song; it was from a Disney movie and was on one of the kiddie records I used to listen to when I was extremely young.
I forget which movie it was; but I remember hearing the fairy godmother sing all that stuff about "Salagadoola Mee, and Minchika Boola Roo, something something something, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo!"
I'm 43 now and have forgotten all kinds of important stuff, yet somehow I remember nonsense words from old Disney movies.
Thanks for doing Friday 55!

I was smiling before I even got to 'it turned me blonde' whereupon I snorkled out loud. Very musical and quite magical, (and the movie was Cinderella, I think, Janna.)Loved it.

…well, this isn't the Rogers & Hammerstein version, but I certainly do remember this song from childhood! And if it worked and turned you blond … well – I might be singing it next. I pay a small fortune to continue to be a "natural blond". 🙂
Other Mary
What fun!
Alice Audrey
LOL! What fun.
Ann (bunnygirl)
Nothing like a little creative mashup! There are worse outcomes than going blonde.

Nara – so cool that you can put these things together. I have done very crude animations, but not using code, just drawing by hand with an animation program. I think code would be way beyond me. Quite amazing that you can do it! (And don't miss a 55.) Congrats on Ellora's Cave. I have been to the Ellora Caves! Ha. And Ajanta. Very beautiful. k.
